Acute Angle Closure Glaucoma leads to a rapid rise in eye pressure. This is unlike the rest of the glaucomas, where slow increases in eye pressure are generally without symptoms and go unnoticed by patients.
In contrast, Acute Angle Closure Glaucoma often presents with dramatic symptoms—a red, painful, tearing eye, usually on one side only. Coming quickly to the eye center will be necessary to break the attack and prevent ongoing damage. Your eye doctor will break the attack using a quick laser therapy, frequently accompanied by eye drop medications. To prevent recurring attacks, the laser therapy will also be applied to the opposite eye, generally within the following week.
